Summer in The Hat

Summer is here and Medicine Hat is an excellent place to enjoy it. You can't beat the heat found here and the city is alive and taking full advantage of the season. Take a look at some of the great ways to keep yourself entertained in our city.

Alive After Five
Stop downtown in Medicine Hat on 3rd street after 5:00 pm on Wednesdays for our weekly street festival. Vendors, food trucks, buskers and all kinds of activities are available. Many of the merchants are open late and offer discounts. Try your luck at a 50/50 draw. Listen to live music by talented local musicians. Stay late with friends at one of the open patios. It's a great way to enjoy a summer evening.

The Market at Medalta
On Thursday nights, Medalta Potteries is host to an amazing community market. I've mentioned this Market before and it's no secret that it's one of my favorite events. The Market runs year round from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday evenings. The vendors are inside, protected from the weather. On warm nights, they open the big doors and expand out into the courtyard. Come by for a great supper from one of the many vendors or food trucks that make up part of the market. Enjoy a glass of wine or try some honey beer. Shop a little for some quality items. Pick up your breads, veggies and fruits for the week (along with delicious sweets like pure honey, fudge, cupcakes and more). Listen to the entertainment of the evening and relax with friends in a real community setting. This week, Macey Marshall will be at the market to sing and play guitar. She is a very talented young lady. See the Market's Facebook page for weekly updates.

The Medicine Hat Farmer's Market
Come out Saturday mornings for fresh farm products and locally crafted items. This is a large market with many, many vendors selling quality item and delicious food. Their motto is Make it, Bake it, Grow it, Sell it. The Market runs from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Cypress Center.

Liquid Nightclub Flea Markets
Located in the parking lot at Liquid Nightclub, flea markets will be held throughout the summer. Visit the market this Saturday 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. August dates scheduled for August 9th and August 16th. Vendors can rent a space for $20. Tables are supplied for an extra $10 (optional). For more information on the flea markets, call 403-527-5170

The Park After Dark
The Park after Dark is an outdoor theater set up on the toboggan hill at Kin Coulee Park. The gates open at 7:00 and the first show starts about 9:30. The Park after Dark runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday (weather permitting) and each night is a different double feature with a flat admission of $5.00 per person. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on. Brings snacks and drinks or take advantage of the vendors and food trucks that participate.

Drive-In Family Date Night
A one-time event on July 19th, brought to us by the Lion's Club and hosted at the Costco parking lot. They will be showing the Lego Movie beginning at 9:00 pm. This is an old fashioned type drive-in where you sit in your car and tune in with FM radio. Parking opens at 8:00 pm and admission is free. There will be a BBQ concession available for good eats.

Downtown Medicine Hat Art Walk
The Roving Art Walk is sponsored by a variety of businesses in the downtown area. Participants are encouraged to walk to each location throughout Medicine Hat downtown area and experience the wealth of art in the city. Maps for the next event can be found at participating locations. These include the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre, The Clay Trade, Inspire Studio, Gallery & Café, Cactus Clay Pottery, Remenda Designs, and The Hive Artists' Hub. Check out the murals on our downtown buildings, meet other people interested in art and enjoy some of the rich culture we are fortunate to have. The next Roving Art Walk will be this Friday, July 11th.

PechaKucha Night
Let me say first thing, I love the PechaKucha idea. Too often we think intentional learning ends when we graduate from formal education. PechaKucha is a fantastic way to learn about new interests from someone who is passionate about the topic and who lives in your community. Each presenter at a PechaKucha 20x20 night uses a simple format of 20 slides (images) with 20 seconds to show each slide and talk about it. The topic might be a hobby, an exotic trip, a favorite pet, a recent concert, a community event, or anything really. It's a great way to randomly learn about people, interests and events in your community. The next PechaKucha night in Medicine Hat will be at 8:20 pm on July 16th at Medalta. Come early and enjoy a wood-fired pizza by Il Forno Vagabondo. See their facebook page for a sneak peak of the next event. And if you have something to share, be sure to contact the organizers.

The Monarch Theatre
This community theater is downtown on 2nd street. Remodeled with care, the Monarch hosts the best movies. This includes old favorites as well as new blockbusters. They also host theme nights and other specialty events. Take advantage of their 5&5 deal on Wednesdays and Sundays. Only $5.00 to get in and $5.00 for a popcorn and can of pop. Movies are shown every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 pm. See the latest news on their FB page.

Medicine Hat Pop Up Park
Located downtown on 3rd street, the Pop Up Park was made possible though the cooperation of the land owner, neighboring businesses and numerous volunteers. Their initial hard work and time have paid off and now it is available to be enjoyed by everyone. The gardens, art, and performances by local musicians make this a place to relax and interact with the people in your city.

Giant Chess Set
Stop at the Giant Chess Set for a game. The largest playable chess set in the world is available from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm downtown next to the Medicine Hat Public Library.

Medicine Hat Public Library
Although it's not a strictly summer event, the Medicine Hat Public Library needs a mention here. We have a fantastic library in Medicine Hat! Besides a great selection of books, and a fantastic children's area, they are also part of The Alberta Library system (which means they can get books in for you from all over and you can take books out almost anywhere in the province - see the website for a list of participating libraries). and they are about more than books. They host all kinds of events for all ages. Literally All ages. There are crafting events, movies, computer game evenings, game nights, nature walks, learning seminars, storytime (of course), and more. Check out their Enriched magazine for a list of all the goodness waiting for you.

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Center
The Medicine Hat Interpretive Center has its home in Police Point Park. The center hosts nature-related events throughout the year. Learn about our natural landscape in Alberta, learn about beavers and actually see them live in their habitat, or bees and other insects, or hold a baby chick or bunny in the spring. Take a walk through many of the trails in Police Point Park and learn about the plants seen there. These are just some of the events and activities offered. Scheduled events and activities can be found on their website. The next event is a Full Moon walk, this Saturday beginning at 8:45 pm. See the moon rise and take a stroll through the park by the light of the full moon.

The Chili Cook-Off
The 25th Annual Chili Cook-off is on Saturday, July 19th. For me, this event is the kick off to the Medicine Hat Stampede. Forget about cooking and come sample some of the best chili dishes out there. Held downtown in the Hat from noon until 3:00 pm. It's a bargain at only $5.00 a person.

The Medicine Hat Stampede and Exhibition
This summer event is everything you expect in a Canadian summer fair. Top quality, professional rodeo, a community parade, a great midway, delicious fair food, a petting zoo, fantastic nightly concerts, daytime shows, and of course, fireworks. The Stampede runs from July 23rd - July 26th, noon until midnight, at the Stampede grounds. This year the theme is "A Salute to Youth." Co-op Grocery Stores in Medicine Hat are selling midway wristbands for $29.00 (limited time so check with them). This is a good idea if your kids like the rides. For rodeo tickets (and information about other agricultural events), see their website here. See the full brochure for more information.

The Saamis Tepee
Known as the world's tallest tepee, the Saamis Tepee overlooks the Seven Persons Creek Coulee. This steel construction stands over 20 stories high and was built to withstand extreme temperatures and wind speeds of 150 mph. The structure is painted with white for purity, red for the rising and setting sun, and blue for flowing waters. Large 12 ft. storyboards mounted on the tepee walls depict different aspects of Native American culture and history through native artwork. Below in Seven Persons Coulee is the Saamis Archaeological Site. Take a self-guided walking tour of this very important archaeological site of the Northern Plains. Once a buffalo camp, experts believe over 83 million artifacts are buried at the site. You can find the Saamis Tepee in Medicine Hat off the Trans-Canada highway.

Echo Dale Regional Park
Located a short distance outside Medicine Hat off Holsom Road is Echo Dale Regional Park. This is a great place to spend a summer afternoon. The Park has a swimming lake and a separate boat lake with a fun stream between the two. The swim lake has a nice grassy area surrounding the sand to spread out a blanket. There is also a playground right there, beach volleyball, and a concession stand for goodies. At the other end of the park is a walking path passing the historical barn site, a pioneer house, and a mine site. In the evening, enjoy sitting by the fire. The park is open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm daily. Medicine Hat provides a free shuttle out to Echo Dale from the city on Saturdays and Sundays. You can catch the shuttle at the main transit site downtown between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. The last bus leaves Echo Dale at 5:30 pm.

City Parks
The city has other parks besides Police Point Park and Echo Dale Regional Park.
Kin Coulee has a stream to explore, beach volleyball nets, a great playground, a baseball diamond, and great picnic areas with tables and fire pits. This is the home of the Kinsmen Skate Plaza, a busy place enjoyed by kids of all ages. Stop by Sunday mornings for a breakfast waffle by Wannawaffle (10:00 am - 1:00 pm) and take a walk through the tunnel to the off-leash dog park.
Lion's Park and Strathcona Island Park are intertwined with walking trails and river views. At Strathcona enjoy barbecue pits and picnic tables along the river, play on the fantastic playground with new equipment or cool off on the water playground.
Besides the Strathcona Island Park water playground, Medicine Hat has three other water playgrounds for you to enjoy. Stop by for an afternoon of fun at the Ross Glen park and enjoy a soft giant pretzel, an ice cream treat, a hotdog, or another tasty from Kristi's Cove.

A delicious waffle by Wannawaffle.
Find them at the Market at Medalta or Sundays at Kin Coulee Park.

Swimming Pools and Skating Rinks
We are fortunate to live in a city with year-round skating and swimming. See the schedule on the city website for swimming here, and for skating here.

CyclePath Shop Ride
Every Tuesday, Cyclepath in Medicine Hat hosts a mountain bike ride leaving from their store at 7:30. This is a great way to get outdoors and meet other bike enthusiasts. All skill levels welcome. Check out their facebook page for information.

The Esplanade Arts and Heritage Center
While not an outdoor event, visiting the Esplanade is still a summer-worthy activity. The Center hosts professional concerts, galleries and exhibits. These change throughout the year. Thursdays are free admission to the galleries all day long. Grab some lunch at the Coffee House and take it up to the Rooftop Terrace to enjoy the view and the beautiful weather. Visit their website to see what is currently hosted and for information about upcoming events.

The Medicine Hat Speedway
For some high speed action, stop out at the Medicine Hat Speedway. The Speedway is home to 3 local classes, the Hobby Stock, IMCA Stock and Renegade Trucks. The next event is Stock Car races on July 19th.

The Mavericks
Take in an evening baseball game and cheer on the Mavericks. This is a summer activity enjoyed by the whole family. For schedule information and admission prices, see their website

Geocaching and the Southern Alberta Weekend V (Saw V)
Put on by the SE Alberta Region Cache Hunters Club (SEARCH) August 15 - 17th. This geocache event is a summer highlight for new and experienced geocachers alike. For the rest of the summer, try to find some of the already placed caches from previous years. Medicine Hat and area has a wealth of geocaches to find, taking you to places you might not otherwise see.

Sunridge Observatory
A short ways outside the city is the Sunridge Observatory, home of the Medicine Hat Astronomy Club. The club hosts monthly open house events. This is a great opportunity to see the night sky. The next open house will be this Saturday, July 12th. It will be a full moon night. The observatory usually opens about 7:30 pm. If there is a presentation, it will begin about 8:00. The observatory will be open until around 11:30 or possibly later. For more information and a complete schedule of events, see their website

Jane's Walk
Jane's Walk is world-wide movement come to Medicine Hat. In practice, it is a series of walks through different areas of the city. The purpose of the walk is to learn about the history in the area. The walks get people out to explore their city and connect with their community. Jane's Walk in Medicine Hat will be on September 27th throughout the day. Keep an eye on the city website for more information as the date draws closer.

This is by no means a complete list of available activities in the city, but it gives you a good idea of the variety out there. Get out there and enjoy your summer and take advantage of all the wonderful things this city has to offer.
